Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 12-18-2017

By Steve Blake

Current water level is 704.95 and water surface temp is 46 degrees.

Crappie, large mouth, Kentuckys, and blue cats continue to be the best action this week.

Patterns have not changed much other than almost all fish have now moved to their winter pattern areas so the fish are more concentrated and the bite has gotten even better.

Crappie are still on the bare bluffs lakewide with best depth being between 18 and 25 feet depending on the day and the conditions. Chartreuse color combos still working best. 1/4 oz Bob Bates short shank jigheads rigged with 2 inch Swarm jig bodies still working best. Many of you have e mailed me asking why I use such heavy 1/4 oz jigs. To me they get down to the desired depth faster, keep the line tighter so I feel the bites better, and as I ease down the bluff they stay down to the targeted depth better than lighter 1/8 or 1/16th oz jigs. Crappie are still averaging 11 to 13 inches, but you will catch a ton of smaller fish. If you are in an area where you are getting bites from the many smaller crappie be patient the bigger fish are there too. My son and I fished 3 hours one morning this week and caught over 60 crappie but only 28 of those were in the 11 to 13 inch size range that we kept. In that 3 hours due to the high winds we were forced to work one small bluff area not moving more than 30 yards back and forth. So as you can see if you hit the right area the crappie are holding in big concentrated schools.

I know it sounds like a broken record but the large mouth and spotted bass are still on the steep chunk-rock main lake and secondary points and banks and are best caught on jerk-baits in shad and clown colors. Bright sunny days seem to be best. A twitch twitch pause retrieve with only a second or two pause has been effective. Expect fish in the 2 to 4 pound size range.

Blue cats are also on the same pattern as last reported with cut shad fished on flats with the wind blowing in at depths of 3 to 8 feet producing best. Fish in the 3 to 7 pound size range are common with larger fish coming in on occasion.

The next four days are forecast to be in the 50's and 60's with not much wind. That should be great fishing conditions. Hope everyone can get down to the lake before the holidays and get in on the action.

See ya on the water!!!!! Steve Blake 660-525-0692
