Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 3-2-2018

By Steve Blake

Current water level is 710.39 and water surface temp is 39 degrees.

We had some great crappie fishing this week, but had to work a little harder and longer to limit here on the lower part of the lake. The fish are beginning to scatter form their winter areas to transition into the creeks and coves to stage up for the spawn in a few weeks so they got a bit more difficult to find in big schools near the dam. We did find fish 20 feet deep in 22 to 30 feet of water on brush piles that were on the edges of river channel drops. We fished 1/4 ounce Bob Bates pink head short shank jigs rigged with Swarm jig bodies right at the top of the brush. Best colors were char and red and char and blue and char. The bite was VERY VERY soft. Fish averaged 10 to 12 inches. One helpful hint put very little action on the jig to get best results. Many of our bigger fish came just dead sticking the jig.

Many of you have asked me about the walleye bite below the dam this week. While it is not really hot as yet a few have been caught up to five pounds. With the warmer weather coming this week and the longer days I look for that bite to turn on over the next week or so.

Best bet for large mouth continues to be jerkbaits on main lake points. With the high stained water gold and black and clown seem to be the best colors. A twitch twitch pause retrieve seems to be producing best.

The catfish bite is still very good on the upper Grand river arm, and on upper lake of the Ozarks. Cut shad in 4 to 10 feet of water on flats near the river channel are producing a lot of really big blues.

Work began this week on the new dock at Sterett Creek and the walkway form 4 dock to 1 dock is in. You will be amazed at the improvements that Ken and Cathy and the crew have made on the complex this winter.

Well that is it for this week we are only a few weeks away from shorts and fish frys. See ya on the water.
