Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 7-18-2018

By Steve Blake

Current water level is 705.36 and rising after 3 to 6 inches of rain in the area yesterday.

With a fast rise this time of year it has been my experience the fishing will change for the better . First of all after the rise at LOZ stabilizes they will start running water at Truman Dam. This will create current and spark all species to feed. It doesn't look like this will happen till mid week next week. that being said with the rise before they run water look for crappie to move shallower on both the brush piles and in the timber. I think the water on the very upper end of Truman will stain up pretty quick so the mid lake to lower lake areas should be the best fishing for several days to come.

As I said look for the crappie to move from the brush piles in deep water 15 to 20 feet up to those piles on the flats in 8 to 12 feet of water. The timber fish should also get shallower as the water will cool from the rain. For me minnows fished at the top of the brush piles, and 6 to 8 feet deep in the timber are still producing best. Take lots of minnows to allow you to weed thru the little fish.

Also on a fast rise the large mouth should move to the backs of the creeks and coves to feed on the fresh food being washed in. Spinner baits have produced best for me under these conditions. Chartreuse and white 1/2 oz single # 6 blade slow rolled have produced my best fish on a rise. Again when they begin to generate a lot of current to drop the lake look for the bass to feed back out on the main lake current breaks with plastics producing best.

A fast rise is great for cats as they also will move to the backs of the creeks to feed up on the bait being washed in until the influx slows.

Whites and hybrids are still best suspended just off the humps at depths of 12 to 15 feet. Live shad have been best, but big spoons and sassy shads in white or mustard yellow have also been good.

It is going to produce some great fishing over the next couple of weeks.

As the lake rises, and again as the lake begins to fall conditions are going the change almost daily and you have to adjust as they change. As I said look for most species to move back while the lake rises, and move to main lake current as they begin to generate, and the level falls.

That's it for this week see ya at Sterett Creek Marina!!!!
