Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 8-16-2018

By Steve Blake

This is not a typo------ current water level is 704.60 yep 704.60 and water surface temp is 84 degrees.

Well true to it's past history Truman is living up to it's reputation of the hotter the weather the hotter the fishing. Fishing across the board for pretty much all species has really picked up this week.

Good reports from all areas of the lake for crappie this week. Near the dam the brushpiles and submerged fence rows on the flats continue to produce limits of 10 to 12 inch fish in a short time if you hit the right pile or row. Stay on the move till you find fish and once you do stick in that area they are schooled up. Most fish are coming in 10 to 15 feet of water fishing minnows just over the top of the cover. Again as in the past take plenty of minnows as you still have to weed thru alot of small fish to get a limit of the better sized crappie. I have been going thru 2 scoops approx. 10 dozen to boat a three person limit of 45 keepers. Long-pole fishing in the mid lake to upper lake areas has also been hot dipping minnows near the trees 6 to 12 feet down in 8 to 20 feet of water. The Grand, Osage, Pomme, and Tebo have all been giving up limits of crappie in three to five hours of fishing. Helpful tip with the water being in the 704 range there are literally thousands of trees and bushes exposed that have not been fished all year. Look for those pieces of cover that are barely out of the water or just under the surface and you will be fishing stuff that has not been pressured all year!!!!!!!!!!

There has been some surface feeding action for white bass and small hybrids in the Dam and Little Tebo areas early and late in the day. Look for schooling fish just after sunrise and just before sunset. Once you see them cast a 1/4 or 1/2 ounce Bob Bates spoon past the schools and reel it back as fast as you can and hold on. Most of these fish are small but there are some 1 to 2 pound whites in the schools and some 2 to 4 pound hybrids. Cloudy calm days have produced the best action. Schools have been staying up 45 minutes to and hour. I have also had reports of the same action in the KK Island area.

Large mouth are the exception this week as that bite has slowed. Still a few early and late fish on top water and with the rapid fall of lake level most of the bass have moved to ledges close to deep water. A variety of plastic fished SLOWWWWWW on the ledges is the best bet during the day. Go small for numbers beavers and small worms, and use 10 inch power worms for big fish.

Catfish blues mostly continue to be red hot on cut shad drifted on the flats in 6 to 12 feet of water. Most of the fish are under the slot with a few overs. They also seem to be schooled up somewhat so once you hit a few hang with that area.

Trolling for walleye has been good this week using a variety of crank-baits that dive 10 to 12 feet deep in shad, craw-fish, and fire tiger colors on humps and hard bottom flats. I have reports of walleye coming from the Cemetery in Little Tebo, the south humps at KK Island, and on the hard bottom flat between Shawnee Bend beach and boat ramp. Several fish in the 3 to 5 pound size coming in. It is not a bang bang bite but with patience a few anglers are limiting out.

Well that's it for this week hope y'all can get down to Sterett Creek to get in on the action. See ya on the water!!!!!
