Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 8-23-2017

By Steve Blake

Current water level is 709.97 and rising and water surface temp at the dam is 80 degrees.

Well the rain we got Monday 3 to 4 inches here in Warsaw and 7 to 9 inches in the flood plain north and west of us has the lake on a rise. This is going to make for some great fishing over the next few weeks. The corps has already started the dam back up running 2 turbines 24 hours a day. This will get the current flow going and spark the whites and hybrids to start feeding on the humps. There has been some surface feeding activity on the whites and hybrids early and late in the day at KK Island and the Airport in the Osage as well as in the lower Pomme Arm. Walking top water baits in chrome or shad colors have been working best. When the fish go down during the day look for them with jigging spoons fished on the bottom over the humps in 14 to 22 feet of water.

The storm seems to have sparked the bigger crappie to feed a bit as yesterday we took 3 nice limits of crappie fishing over flooded stumps in the Little Tebo Arm using minnows. We fished 14 to 18 feet of water and brought the minnow up just a foot or two off the bottom. We still had to work thru a lot of small fish but had a dozen nice crappie in the 12 to 14 inch size range for the day. Bites are super soft so you really have to be on your toes. Do not set the hook on the initial strike but wait until the crappie pull down on the rod tip slightly to set and you will improve your strike to catch ratio.

The rising water has already improved the catfishing. Up in the backs of the creeks where the current is coming in night crawlers fished on the bottom have produced some fast action for channel cats in the 1 to 3 pound size range. The blue cats are still best on jugs set 8 to 10 feet deep on the main lake flats near the dam baited with cut shad or bluegill. We are seeing several fish in the slot but over the slot and under the slot numbers have improved this week.

The rising water as it floods the green grass and bushes will certainly have the large mouth bass moving back shallow to feed. Spinner baits, buzz baits, frogs, and top waters are usually most effective on the shallow grass and bush bass. It has been my experience that on a fast rise like we are having now the best concentrations of bass will be in the backs of the creeks and coves.

With constant current at the dam and newly flooded green cover we should see some great fishing over the next few weeks. Temps are forecast to be way below normal with high temps of 75 to 80 degrees and lows in the mornings of 60 and no more rain for awhile. That is just icing on the cake great weather to fish in for this time of year.

I have some days open from now till the end of the month so if you wanna come down and get your string stretched gimme a call!!! 660-525-0692

See ya at Sterett Creek Marina!!!!
