Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 10-13-16

Current water level is 710.25 and water surface temp at the dam is 70 degrees.

The recent rains have the lake 4 feet above normal pool and they are running water at the dam almost 24 7. This is a good thing if you are angling for large mouth, white bass, and hybrids. However the crappie and catfish bite with the rapidly rising water levels have slowed.

Two things have the whites and hybrids going strong on two different patterns. First of all the almost constant power generation has the bite on the humps that are in 10 to 20 feet of water going strong as well as on the weir wall at the dam. As usual white or chrome spoons of 1/2 to 1 ounce jigged of the bottom for the whites, and white or chartreuse 4 inch sassy shads on a 3/4 ounce head for the hybrids. Vary retrieve with the sassy shad from a slow crawl on the bottom to a stop and go to a steady retrieve at different depths to figure out how the hybrids want it each day.

The second thing affecting the white bass and hybrid bite is that the lake surface water temp has reached the magic 70 degree mark and with the continued cool nights that temp should continue to fall. The cooler water has some of the whites and hybrids beginning to move to their fall feed-up patterns where they move to the windy points and the backs of windblown pockets to feed on the shad in those areas. These fish will take a variety of baits from inline spinners like the Rooster Tail and Shyster to 1/4 ounce chrome Rattletraps, to the small chrome top waters like the Pop R and Zara Puppy. If you hit the right bank or pocket the action on these can be fast and furious.

The large mouth bite has also improved with the high water getting into the grass in the backs of the creeks and coves this week and spinner baits, buzz baits, and plastic jerk baits in shad colors fished thru the flooded grass are producing. Seeing some nice large mouth in the 2 to 4 pound range this week.

As I said earlier the fast rise in lake level has slowed the crappie bite dramatically at least on the lower lake and the catfish bite has slowed also. It seems that crappie are always slow on a rise and this bite should improve as the catch the lake level and the water begins to drop.

Well it time for breakfast at Little Papa Joe's. Looks like a great weekend weather wise so come on down to Sterett Creek and get in on the hot bite. !!!!!!

See ya there !!!!
