Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 12-10-16

By Steve Blake

Current water level is 705.76 and water temp is 46 degrees.

The cold front of the past few days has finally given us the water temps we need to set up the perfect conditions for the winter pattern for Crappie, large mouth, and catfish. The unusually warm weather for the past few weeks had the fish very scattered but the cold front of the past few days finally has given us the water temps we are more used to for this time of year. These colder water temps have put the shad deep and the fish have followed.

Crappie are beginning to school up on the bluffs at 18 to 22 feet our normal winter pattern and jigs have been best. We are dropping a 1/4 ounce Bob Bates jig with a Swarm jig body to the bottom and lifting it about a foot off the bottom as we move parallel to the bluff as slow as possible. Size is also improving on the average but you still have to weed thru a lot of small fish to take a limit. As always in the cold water bites are very very very soft so you really have to stay on your toes. The water is still a little off color in most areas so Chartreuse combinations have been best jig colors. One good tip is watch for the balls of shad on your electronics as you move along the bluffs and concentrate on the depths and areas where you find the shad.

The cold weather has moved the large mouths from the coves and creeks to the main lake points and suspending jerkbaits have produced a few fish when fished on a SLOWWWWWW stop and go retrieve. The bite will get better as the water temps drop even further. The blue cats will fire up as the water temps fall and we begin to see a shad kill. I can't predict when the shad kill will occur but it will be eveident when you start to see dead shad floating along the bank. When you do fish cut shad in one to three feet of water on the flats where the wind is blowing the dead shad to the bank. It will amaze you the blues you can catch shallow when the shad kill happens.

Well that is it for this week. I am glad that the winter pattern has finally set up for us. Winter crappie special is good thru February so give me a call and let's go get some to release to the grease. 660-525-0692. Well off to Lil Papa Joe's for breakfast. Oh and by the way they are open all winter at 6 a.m. till 2 p.m. Thursday thru Monday. See ya at the lake!!!
