Sterett Creek Marina - Truman Lake

Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 3-19-2019

By Steve Blake

Well finally looks like Spring is here. It has been a long winter but the crew at Sterett Creek Marina has been hard at it with improvements in all areas of the facility especially the campground. I think every one will be impressed. That being said let's talk fishing.

Current water level is 714.62 and water surface temp at the dam is 41 degrees however up the rivers and creeks temps are close to 48 . I have heard several negative comments on social media about the lake being high and muddy and the fishing slow. That is simply not the case. Yes the water is stained you can see a jig down about a foot on the lower part of Truman near the dam. As far as fishing being slow I fished several days this week and the least number of crappie we caught was about 75 fish. The fish are 20 feet deep in 25 to 30 feet of water in the deeper cuts and coves, and are in big schools once you find them. We are weeding thru a lot of small fish but the good ones are right there with them. Watch your graph while idling the guts of the coves and the schools will black out the screen from 20 to 25 feet when you find them We are dropping a 1/4 ounce Bob Bates jig-head rigged with SWARM JIG black and char or white and char to the top of the school and giving it very little action. Bites are very soft so you really have to pay attention. Best areas have been within a few miles of the dam.

The stained water will warm fast this week I expect water temps to be at or near the fifties by the weekend. This means that fish should start to migrate shallower and the bass fishing should pick up. Cats fish are already moving back in the creeks to feed on what the current is bringing in. There have been several nice walleye taken below the dam in the past few days and this should get even better as the water temps rise.

See ya at Sterett Creek!!!
