Truman Lake Fishing Report

fishing report 6-23-2016

Current lake level is 708.45 and surface water temp is 85 degrees.

Well true to form Truman's reputation for fast action in the hot weather has come to life this week. With the warmer weather the crappie, whites and hybrids, largemouth and catfish have all turned on to their summer patterns.

Crappie this week are coming in numbers from all over the lake with the really big fish coming from way up the river arms while on the lower lake the numbers of crappie being taken are really awesome. Minnows are the best bet. On the lower lake brush piles in 10 to 15 feet of water are best with crappie holdong at the top of the brush. If you hit the right pile you can limit out quick. Bring plenty of minnows as you will have to weed thru alot of little fish to get a limit of keepers. Up the rivers the bite is not as fast but the size of the crappie is much better. Look for fish on the flats just off the river channel in cedars and hedges and longpole minnows 6 to 12 feet deep. The more stained the water the shallower the fish will suspend.

The white bass seem to be busting fry all over the lake early and late in the day. Just keep your eyes peeled for surfacing schools. Hot area has been near the dam. Cast a 1/4 ounce flash spoon past the surfacing fish and reel back fast and hold on. Again alot of these fish are small but there are good ones also.

Hybrids have been on the humps with best bait being a 4 inch chartruse sassy shad on a 3/4 ounce head. You can slow roll it on the bottom or do a fast stop and go retrieve letting the bait fall back to the bottom each stop. If you are lucky enough to see the hybrids chase shad on top over the humps cast the sassy past them and reel like heck. They will nail it. Hybrids have been running 4 yo 10 pounds.

Red shad and purple power worms fish Texas rigged with  4/0 hook and 5/16 ounce slip sinker on the main lake points and ledges at depths of 6 to 12 feet continue to be the best pattern for largemouth. There is a little topwater action on the points shallow very early and very late in the day with pop r's and spooks the best baits.

Cats are starting to come off the spawn and move deeper on the main lake flats with cut shad still the best bait. Look for cats in 8 to 15 feet of water.

Well that's it for this week. As usual Truman fishing is heating up along with the hot weather. See ya at Sterett Creek Marina!!!
