Truman Lake Fishing Report

Fishing Report 9-7-2016

Current water level is 705.24 and the water surface temp at the dam is 78 degrees.

With the lack of power generation at the dam for several days the stable conditions have improved fishing. I would say the hottest bite has been for crappie with the average size of keepers running 10 to 11 inches. It is still a bite for the crappie where you have to weed thru a lot of small fish but once you locate fish the keepers are there also, You need to take plenty of minnows if you want to cull out a limit of keepers. Best pattern for me this week has been fishing the old stump beds, road beds with ditch stumps, and fence rows that were cut before they built the lake. Most of these only stick up 1 to 2 feet off the bottom and you have to locate them with the graph. Best ones have been on flats in a total depth of 8 to 16 feet in the Sterett Creek Area. Once you find the cover simply drop a minnow to the bottom then lift it up 2 feet off the bottom and hold it dead still as you work very very very SLOWWWWWLY up and down the stump row. Bites are super soft so you really have to pay attention. Do not set the hook on the initial bite as always in the summer wait for the fish to put a slight downward pressure on the rod tip then set the hook. The softest bites we have gotten this week have been the biggest crappie. We have had limits of crappie for everyone in the boat on every outing this week fishing this pattern.

With the lack of power generation the white bass and hybrid bite has been inconsistent but there have been days early and late in the day where we have found them feeding on the humps in 12 to 18 feet of water. Jigging 1/2 ounce Bob Bates spoons off the bottom has been the best technique. Best areas have been the humps at the south end of KK Island and the dam area on the weir wall. The fish are not staying in one place they are moving as they feed on shad so you have to stay on the move and only drop spoons when you find a school on the graph. They are holding very very very tight to the bottom so keep your graph on full zoom.

With the water temps coming down the largemouth bite has started to pick up with topwaters fished on the main lake channel swing points early and late taking some good fish while 7 inch plastic worms fished in these same areas at depths of 8 to 15 feet are working during the middle of the day. Best topwaters have been Pop R's and Spooks in shad color patterns, and the best worm colors have been black, and red shad.

The jug fishing has picked up for the blue cats this week with the fish coming on cut shad on main lake flats in 8 to 15 feet of water. Best days have been windy days for the cats. Several fish in the 3 to 6 pound size range have been taken this week.

I have a fairly open schedule for the next 10 days so if you want to get in on the hot crappie bite gimme a call!!!

Well that's it for this week see ya at Sterett Creek Marina!!!
